APA offers continuing education to members through Journal Learning, Conferences, and Online CE.

CE Credits are based on approvals and accreditations currently held by the American Psychotherapy Association’s sister association the American College of Forensic Examiners International:

  • American Psychological Association (APA)
  • California Board of Behavioral Sciences (CBBS)
  • California Board of Registered Nurses (CABRN)
  • Accreditation Council of Continuing Medical Education (ACCME)
  • Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB)
  • National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC)

Requirements

APA members who became Diplomates after October 2001 are strongly encouraged to obtain 15 continuing education credits each year to maintain Diplomate status.

Guidelines for obtaining 15 CE credits are as follows:

  • One CE credit is issued per one hour of course instruction.
  • Continuing education credits can be obtained through journal learning, online, regional meetings and annual meetings or from an equivalent organization.
  • The Reporting period for CE credits is from Jan 1st to Dec 31st. Please note your membership renewals are based on your anniversary date, while CE credits are based on a calendar year.

Submitting continuing education credits from an equivalent organization:

  • You may count CE earned through an equivalent organization towards your yearly CE with APA. However, you must submit copies of the certificates of completion/attendance to APA.

Certificate should contain the following:

  • Your name
  • Date of the course
  • Title of the course
  • Number of CE credits issued
  • Sponsoring organization of the course
  • Any accrediting information regarding the sponsoring organization

CE credits are not required the year you receive the certification. The CE credit reporting period begins the first January after you receive the certification.

Any questions regarding these guidelines should be directed to the Continuing Education Department at (417) 823-0173, fax (417) 823-9959, or send an e-mail inquiry.
