In order to apply for Diplomate status in the American Board of Psychological Specialties, a professional must meet the following requirements:
- Be a member in good standing with APA.
- Have a doctoral degree in Psychology from a regionally accredited graduate program with a current valid license to practice psychology.
- The applicant must not have been convicted of a felony or disciplined for an ethical violation in the last 10 years. The applicant must not be under investigation by any legal or licensing board.
- Submit a copy of his or her curriculum vitae/professional résumé, indicating experience in the field. The documents are reviewed by a minimum of three members of the Executive Advisory Board.
- Successful completion of the examination for the division of ABPS to which they are applying.

Diplomates are expected to complete 15 hours of continuing education (CE) per year from the American Psychotherapy Association or an equivalent organization.
